PRACTICE ACTIVE ANTI-RACISM IN THE CLASSROOM

  1. Pay attention to dynamics in class discussion. Speak less if you are taking up too much space. Talk to your professor if you notice discrimination in who is being called on, who is being listened to. Pay attention to and name when you observe narratives that center white cultural dominance.

  2. Bring race into policy work. Look for and point out ways that class materials ignore race or center whiteness.

  3. Pay attention to where class materials come from -- which voices and writers are included? Ask your professors to include readings from writers who are Black, Indigenous, or from other non-dominant groups.

  4. Allies: Apologize when you make mistakes. Speak up when others say harmful, racist things. Do not stay silent.

  5. Educate yourself - and others. Contribute to our community-developed list of books, articles, papers, podcasts, movies, shows, etc. that discuss intersection of race with education, the economy, the environment, and other policy topics.

  6. Again: talk to your professors. Recommend that "skills-based" classes -- statistics, economics, etc. -- include in the curriculum the ways that these tools have been used to normalize oppression or validate white racial dominance. Share articles and educational resources with professors and classmates.
